Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science Advisor

The Department of Science at Marywood University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology/Clinical Science Laboratory (MT/CLS). Typically, a student spends three years at Marywood University fulfilling the university requirements and those of the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS). In the fourth year of study, the student spends time at an accredited hospital. Alternatively, a student may graduate the with a baccalureate degree in Biology (or other science degree) and then apply to an accredited school of medical technology, earning a MT/CLS certification. Marywood University maintains an affliation with the following medical technology school:

Affiliation with these schools, however, does not garantee the student's acceptance into a program. Courses in the medical technology school curriculum provide the student with both theoretical and practical experiences. Although MT/CLS students complete the requirements for their degree in the summer of their graduating year, they are permitted to attend May commencement ceremonies provided the student does not have more than 6 course credits or 9 internship credits to complete post May graduation. If a MT/CLS student plans to attend May graduation, then the student is required to fill out a Graduation Pariticipation Eligibility Form (GPEF) at the beginning of the spring semester of their graduating year. To receive their Marywood diploma and final transcript, MT/CLS students must register for DEAN 080 during the summer III semester when they are completing the final credits of their summer clinical internship.

Students can find information about the medical technology field related to job opportunities and talk with invited guest speakers from affliate hospitals and former Marywood University MT/CLS students. Occasionally, a field trip is planned during the academic year to give the student a first-hand look at the job responsibilities of a medical technologist/clinical laboratory scientist. The Science Department at Marywood University also subscribes to two medical technology journals: Medical Laboratory Observer and Advance. Students can post their resume at Health Care Hiring, which is an in-depth career resource center for medical, healthcare, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device fields.

The online version of ADVANCE newsmagazine offers a special student section that features stories on learning to write a resume, the value of a benefits package, transitioning from student to employee, and much more!

Available to students is a CLT scholarship from Dade Behring. Students must complete the application form, provide all necessary documentation, and send six (6) copies of all materials to the CLT Scholarship Coordinator.

American Chemical Society Student Affiliate Advisor

In January of 2005, the science students at Marywood University established a Student Affiliate Chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The purpose of this chapter is to foster a better understanding of chemistry and a blending of all the sciences, including biochemistry, biotechnology, and physics. Student members of the ACS will have numerous opportunities to network with science professionals and will be invited to participate in chapter activities and research opportunities at the local, regional, and national level.

The mission of the ACS is to support undergraduate students, their faculty, and local section members in promoting professional development, mentoring, and peer-support mechanisms for those majoring in the chemical sciences.

The society is open to all Marywood University students, including non-science majors.
