This website was designed for parents and students who wish to gain a deeper understanding of childhood obesity. Over the past 30 years, obesity has become a growing problem in society. This trend has been observed in children as well as adults, with the onset of obesity starting at younger ages than ever before. We describe the diagnostic criteria used for identifying overweight versus obese children. Current and past prevalence rates for both the United States and other countries are included to indicate the significance of this epidemic worldwide. This website also examined problems commonly associated with obesity in regards to mental and physical health. We provide a review of theories that attempt to explain the causes of obesity. Finally, we explore a number of possible treatments for childhood obesity. We hope that the information provided will help to raise awareness of this serious concern that affects so many children in negative ways. |
